Most of these were done at the College Street Studio (now Academy of Art Canada) or under its influence. Teachers Jeff & Harvey had studied in Florence and were dedicated to passing on the techniques of the great 19th Century European Academies. Central to the programme was the Drawing Course of Charles Bargue, which provides exquisite drawings from ancient and modern statuary for students to copy and learn from. Picasso and Van Gogh both studied from it, and it is definitely recommended for anyone who wants to learn the right way (the instructors always said they preferred students with no art experience to those who had studied at a modern art college, as the latter would have to unlearn everything first)! I took the course for 3 years and never got into the painting part, but what I learned from drawing there has informed every part of my painting process.
